Bless Our Vets

When my daughter arrived with her grandmother to pick me up from work today, she couldn’t wait to tell me about English class today. They had a substitute teacher, and the man happens to be a Vietnam Vet. Considering they are reading “The Things They Carried”, it was somehow appropriate. “The Things They Carried” is a novel by Tim O’Brien, based on his time in Vietnam with 23rd Infantry, 3rd Platoon. This gentleman ( Leave to Meriah; she can’t recall the substitute’s name) was able to make the book more alive to at least her, explaining some of the references in the stories.  Those are lessons that will stay with her (and hopefully her generation): not learned out of a book per se, but because of one, and because of a man who understood where the writer was coming from.
