Animal Rights vs Animal Nuts

I love animals. Pets are important, and taking care of them properly is something worth advocating for. There are a lot of cruel, sick people who should never be allowed to own an ant farm, let alone anything bigger. I try to keep up with the New York State’s Animal Advocacy program, I am all in favor of harsher laws against abusers, the spay/neuter programs, pet adoption, and no-kill shelters. I am a huge fan of Steve Capirizzo’s Pet Connection, CAPP, Pet-a-Palooza, the Curtis Lumber family’s efforts for pets, and Benson’s as well.
That all being said, lately I have been seeing a disturbing trend. People who can’t stand the cruelty to animals, but don’t seem to be all that well informed. Stories come up on social media, and rather than to check into the facts, people jump on the band wagon. There is a serious problem with puppy mills; I get that. But that does NOT make all breeders bad. And if you don’t know the breed, you aren’t qualified to make the call. If someone is threatened by an animal running loose, that someone has the right to defend themselves and their property. That doesn’t make them a cold blooded killer. I see people feeding large herds of deer, and I think of the inherent danger…while all most posters are saying is “How cute!” and “You’re such a good person!”
Humans have, for the most part, become far too disassociated with the natural world around them. I see a lack of understanding when it comes to seasonal cycles, survival of the fittest, carrying capacity, and disease and its spreading.
