Vermont is on the brink of passing the Right To Die legislation. Of course, this is causing a lot of commentary on both sides. While some of the people against it may have a valid point about possible abuse, there is so much more to this than that one point.
Many people point out we will euthanize our beloved animals to prevent on-going pain and suffering, but yet cannot offer our beloved human family the same in most places. Then you have those I call “The God Squad”… “Only God can decide when you die”; “It is a sin”; “We have lost our way when we even think of such things”…
The Bible was written by human hands. Period. The only thing the god of Abraham claimed to have put down himself was the 10 Commandments… and let’s face it; very FEW people, even those in the “God Squad”, live by those.
Then there is the fact that not everyone is Christian of any stripe. There are those who follow older gods, there are those who don’t believe in the gods at all. They are not bad people: most of them live their lives with the idea of personal responsibility and actually do a better job of being compassionate human beings…because no one is going to give them a pass on their deliberate attacks on anyone else.
WHY would you want to let someone you love linger in pain and depression, reliant on others for personal care, nutrition, etc?? Families have to make choices every day to pull the plug on loved ones whose only manner of survival is to remain on machines. Are you really so selfish as to demand your loved one stay for YOUR sake, when they are ready to rest? The pain, the despair, the embarrassment they are forced to endure… you think that’s just fine as long as they aren’t in the ground? GET OVER YOURSELF!
The night is closing in
Let me go in peace
Love never ends
My soul will remain;
But free again,
On the wind,
In the rain
Let me go now.
